Skin Care 101

When choosing a skin care product for your skin, it is important to know your skin type. Skin type is fairly universal for all ethnic backgrounds with the only difference being pigmentation. Pigmentation is what gives skin its color.

When determining your skin type there are several factors to consider. Factor number one: do you have oily or dry skin? The second would be whether or not you have pigmented skin. The third factor is skin sensitivity and the fourth is the dreaded reality of aging: wrinkles.

First determine if you have oily or dry skin. Oily skin may have a shiny look and also may feel oily to the touch. Dry skin may feel uncomfortable and tight as well as feel rough and have a dull color.

Sebaceous (oil) glands produce a secretion that helps keep moisture in the skin. Excess oil production can result in oily skin but that is not the only factor. Diet, stress, hormones, medications, and genetics can affect oil production.

The role of Skin pigmentation in choosing skin care products has to do with the predisposition to develop undesirable spots on the skin. The types of spots that skin care products may be able to help fade are freckles and sun spots.

Skin sensitivity has to do with the skin's ability to resist irritation. Sensitive skin reacts easily to a stimulus with stinging, redness, or acne. Rosacea is in the sensitive skin category.

The last factor involved in choosing skin care is the presence of wrinkles. Sun exposure is a major factor in aging of the skin and wrinkles. Prevention is the best with the use of sunscreens in your skin care products.

Rosacea Skin Care

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder. It usually affects the forehead, nose, and cheeks. Capillaries that are close to the skin’s surface become dilated and the result is red blotchy areas and small bumps. Pimples may or may not be present with rosacea. The redness can come an go but can eventually become permanent if it is not treated. The skin tissue can swell and may be tender to the touch.

Rosacea is an inflammatory condition. Rosacea can resemble acne but it a more chronic condition. Rosacea usually begins with frequent flushing of the skin on the face (usually the cheeks and nose). The inflammation may spread across the face and small bumps may appear. The skin may burn and sting as well as the eyes. In very severe cases, vision can become impaired.

The causes of rosacea are not understood and may be different from person to person. The factors that can aggravate this condition are consumption of alcohol, hot liquids, and exposure to sunlight, humidity, spicy foods, and skin care products containing alcohol. Stress, vitamin deficiencies, and infection can contribute to rosacea.

Rosacea usually affects fair skinned women between the ages of thirty and fifty. When men develop rosacea, it is usually more severe and is normally accompanied by rhinophyma (a nose that is chronically enlarged and red).

I personally suffer from rosacea and understand what you are going through if you suffer from it. I have found what works for me in controlling it. I have in the past tried antibiotic therapy (topical and systemic) and found this to not be a long term solution for me. I developed other problems from this long term use of medications. Eating a healthy diet that is full of fresh fruits and vegetables and taking vitamin supplements that help to support my body through stress (mainly B vitamins) have made a huge difference in controlling my rosacea. The most important food has been berries which are full of antioxidants and are good for the skin. Essential fatty acids are also very, very important. Lastly, I use skin care products that contain aloe vera.
